2014 Downtown Events
Cinco de Mayo Celebration
First Saturday of May
Each year Tulareans gather at Zumwalt park to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. It’s a day filled with ethnic food booths and lots of music and fun activities for the whole family. For the kids there’s bounce houses, contests, games and face painters. The public service departments get involved with booths from water and waste management, police and fire departments. There’s always lots of music with multiple bands and singing groups
including mariachi and Mexican music as well as a DJ. Raffle prizes and contests make the event interactive and this year will mark the second annual Chile Verde and Chile Salsa contests. It’s a great fiesta ambiance at Zumwalt Park making this a memorable day! (See page 7 in “Supertown” to see pics from previous events).
Downtown Street Fair
June through August, Evenings
Now in its fourth year, the downtown street fair plays host to some of the best bands found in the Valley. From classic rock, R&B, Top 40, blues and bluegrass, each night offers a different type of music set to the evening’s theme. Weekly themes feature related vendors such as home improvement, related entertainment such as Hawaiian dancers at the luau, or great community involvement with pet adoption, National Night Out and the annual Summer Sally. This year the Street Fair is divided into two parts: “Spring Has Sprung” beginning in June and “Cool Summer Nights” starting in mid-July (first and second weeks of July left for vacationing). The street fair also features great community-involvement events such as the 2nd Annual Tour de Tulare Bike Parade, and 2nd Annual Waiter’s Race and promotion of Tulare Night at Rawhide Park. There’s also philanthropic events such as this year’s effort to assist our aging WWII in their effort to visit Washington DC. The street offers a lot to our area families! (See pages 1- 6 in “Supertown” for pics from last year’s street fair).
Oktoberfest
Mid-October
3rd Annual Oktoberfest garners substantial local support. Multiple bands, a beer garden, sausages and sauerkraut along with polka music make for a memorable evening to bunny-hop off your lederhosen! This event features a parking lot market with retail vendors, along with contests and more. (See Pg 7 in “Supertown” for band pics!)
Halloween Party
Late October
Now in its 4th year, the Downtown Halloween Party is the holiday haunt for many families from Tulare and the surrounding communities. 5,000 flyers are distributed to local schools while stores stay open late and merchants join with tables down “K” Street to distribute candy to kids. Carnival-style games, a costume contest and big screen Halloween cartoons along with food vendors make it a night of spooky fun. For grown-ups, retail booths line the street for pre-holiday shopping. (See Pg 8 in “Supertown” to see one of our crowds at the event.)
Holiday Tree Lighting
Early December
At 27 years, the Downtown Tree Lighting is a tradition for many local families. Last year, the TDA and Chamber of Commerce combined the tree lighting with the Children’s Parade. One special visitor helps the mayor “throw” the switch to the tree lights and the festivities begin. Santa arrives with the parade and returns for photos with attendees. The stage features live entertainment provided by local bands, performance groups and citizens. For adults, there’s the outdoor Happy Holiday Bazaar, an open air market featuring booths with gift and holiday merchandise. Tree lighting attractions vary and can may feature horse-drawn carriage rides, trackless train rides and more. 10,000 flyers are distributed to local schools as a part of the marketing. (See Pg 8 in “Supertown” for photos).
